アメリカ、カリフォルニアの陶芸家、 ジェームス・ロベーラの大振りな鉢作品です。 カリフォルニア出身のロベーラは、大学で彫刻を学んだ後、ゲートルード・オットー・ ナツラー夫妻より作陶を学び、また助手として勤める傍、 自らはサンノゼ州立大学の陶芸教授として、 またデザインやテキスタイルの教鞭も長年執っておりました。 主にナツラー夫妻からの影響と思われる、 シンプルなフォルムと釉の作品が多く、 プラスチックのような光沢のある肌の作品から、 溶岩釉のような荒々しい肌の作品まで、 主に二種類の釉を使い分けて作品を制作しております。こちらの作品は、 黒に近い鼠色をした土が、 轆轤できれいな曲線の碗なりに成型されており、 まるで仏具のお燐のようなきれいな半円状の形をしております。 腰の部分が外側に膨れ出しており、 見込みはたっぷりと深く大きなものです。 ロベーラ作品は、軟性の黒い土に釉を掛けるスタイルをとっており、 素地の黒が釉を通して薄らと透けて見えることで、 黒い色味が表情に加わり、深く奥行きのある表情を作り出しております。 たっぷりと大振りですが、手取りは軽く、 口縁も極薄手でして、ナツラー作品と同じく、 まるでプラスチックで作られたかのような印象があります。 全体に真っ赤な辰砂釉が掛けられており、どろどろと流れ落ちる様子はまるで、マホガニーの木目のような複雑な釉調で流れております。 器の肌は、ガラスのように光沢のあるもので、 球体の部分では、かなり光を反射するものですが、 自然光や肉眼では、より落ち着いた表情で釉調を楽しむことができます。 見込みの底に、小傷がいくつか見られますが、 その他の状態は大変によろしいものです。
This is a large pot by James Lovera, a ceramic artist from California, USA. After studying sculpture in college, he studied pottery with Gertrude Otto Natzler and worked as her assistant, while teaching himself pottery at San Jose State University and design and textiles for many years. His work is mainly simple in form and glaze, influenced by Mr. and Mrs. Nutzler, and he uses two types of glazes, from a plastic-like glossy surface to a rough lava-like glaze. In this piece, the clay, which is almost black, is formed on the potter's wheel into a beautifully curved bowl, which has a beautiful semicircular shape like a Buddhist rin. The waist part bulges outward, and the opening is large and deep. This piece is made of soft black clay and glazed in a style that allows the black color of the clay to show through the glaze, creating a deep and profound expression. Although it is large in size, it is light in the hand and has a very thin mouth rim, giving the impression that it is made of plastic, just like Natzler's work. The entire vessel is covered with a bright red glaze, which flows down in a complex pattern like the grain of a mahogany tree. The surface of the vessel is shiny like glass, and the spherical part reflects light quite well, but in natural light or with the naked eye, the glaze looks more subdued. There are a few small scratches on the bottom of the glaze, but the rest of the glaze is in very good condition.
