ジョセフ・エクベル作としておりましたが、同時代に同じ工房で活躍した作家、エルサ・エクベルの作として訂正いたします。
スウェーデンはグスタフスベリ製陶所に在籍した作家、エルサ・エクベルの朝顔文様が配された小鉢サイズの作品です。全体に青釉を掛けて、金具などで絵柄を削り出していく、独特の掻き落としの技法を開発したスウェーデン陶芸の先駆者、ジョセフ・エクベリと同じ工房で働いた作家で、女性作家としての草分け的な存在です。小振りな平鉢サイズの器に、朝顔がパターン化されて配されており、中国の磁州窯の影響も強いものと考えられます。ジョセフ・エクベリよりも素地に凹凸を持たせて、まるで金属を叩いて作った様な存在感があり、独特の表情が完成します。アール・ヌーヴォーの時代に、アールデコやモダニズムの風を引き込んだ功績は大きく、後世に大きな影響を与えた作品群でもあります。掻き落としの絵柄が、いくつか焼成時に剥落している箇所はありますが、状態はたいへんによろしいものです。
In the recent exhibition, I introduced this bowl as a work by Josef Ekberg, but we would like to correct this to be a work by Elsa Engström, who worked in the same workshop at the same time.
This is a small bowl with a morning glory design by Elsa Engström, an artist who worked at Gustavsberg Pottery in Sweden. She worked in the same studio as Josef Ekberg, a pioneer of Swedish ceramics who developed the unique scraping technique, in which the entire piece is covered with a blue glaze and the design is scraped off with metal fittings, etc. She is a pioneering female artist. The pattern of morning glories on this small flat bowl is strongly influenced by the Chinese Porcelain kilns. The unevenness of the base is more pronounced than that of Joseph Eckberg, giving it a presence as if it were made by hammering metal, which completes its unique expression. In the Art Nouveau period, it was a great achievement to bring in the wind of Art Deco and Modernism, and it is also a group of works that had a great influence on future generations. There are a few areas where the scraped-off designs have come off during firing, but the condition is very good.
